| a brief update |
[27 Jun 2007|02:58pm] |
apparently, I haven't updated here for 6+ months. This probably will be the last time I post here but just letting people know(if anyone's still reading), I've been traveling for a bit and right now I'm India.

| Gigging Amateur turning into Nomadic Amateur |
[13 Dec 2006|09:07am] |
I’ll write more detailed posts soon,
as I’m just being bombarded with loads of end-of-semester work at the moment(I needed a distraction for now).
so the “short” version: I’m leaving NY at the end of the month but coming back for July-August.
I’m not sure if I’ll ever come back after that though, in fact, I’m not sure where I’ll stay in 2008.
but for now, my tentative schedule: -12/29-1/27 Salamanca Spain traveling somewhere in January-Portugal? Morocco? Tunisia? who knows -1/27-2/14….again, who knows where, but London & Barcelona & Turkey for long terms are strong candidates..I just have to make it to Istanbul by the 14th. -2/14-15th flying Istanbul->Doha(8 hr break?)->Shanghai->Seoul -March-June South Korea -3/14-3/17 Austin Texas(SxSW!) if I can get the days off..doubtful -end of April (a week-10days?) Melbourne, Australia -Mid-end of June (10 days-2 weeks) India -July-Aug New York -End of August-mid December(at earliest) Salamanca Spain
so yes,
I need some freelancejobs to fund my traveling so I don’t have to eat ramen for meals everyday.
and aside from Korea, Salamancad, and Melbourne, (possibly London & Barcelona as well)
I need a decplace to stay for really cheap price
* update: it looks like I'll be going to London a week or so after Salamanca.

| The Horrors at Studio B 031106 |
[14 Nov 2006|03:24pm] |
more here this was part of the Product Shop NYC showcase during the CMJ.
It was at Studio B in Brooklyn, yes people who know me, BROOKLYN.
The Horrors' set was extremely hard to photograph as there was barely any light, at least that's my excuse.
I couldn't get my camera focused and the nerd side of me kicked in as they kept on throwing photogenic moments in my face.
One of the pictures shows two security guys on the side of the stage and this is the story: The leadsinger, Faris started to rip off the metal fence thing(whatever the technical term is) on the side as soon as he came onstage.
The management promptly sent two security guards to stand there (walking across the stage in the middle of a song) and guard the place haha.
Then Faris started to swing his mikestand-away from the audience that is, and as soon as he put it down, the security guard took THAT away as well. I love people. and my writing is so not dry whatsoever. nope.
same ole' babbling here: and the requisite babbling: These links are temporary as I'm in the process of getting a proper website(seriously). all the links on previous posts are not working as of now, but I'll put them up again soon.

| New York Dolls at CBGB's 280306 |
[14 Nov 2006|03:24pm] |
Ah yes, isn't it too bad when your past seems a lot better than your current situation? Whatever. this was my "Birthday gig" except that my actual birthday was the day before(shhh) and astonishingly, I'm STILL NOT 21. Seriously, how long has it been since I started counting? geesh.
Anyways, this was the best CBGB's gig I'd been to, but not the last one. Actually, my entire experience at CBGB's was great but nothing beats the combination of New York Dolls + CBGB's. work the magic.
( this way )
more here I know that it's been awhile(just in time for another NYD gig in two weeks!) since these photos were taken but better late than never. I was fond of CBGB's not only because of its significance in NY punk movement but also because of its superb stage layout and sound quality..which is a really rare thing to come across even in New York where it has a vast number of venues...
this was my second to last CBGB's gig so more to come later.
and the requisite babbling: These links are temporary as I'm in the process of getting a proper website(seriously). all the links on previous posts are not working as of now, but I'll put them up again soon.

I'm not going to fuss over what a terrible loss it is to have CBGB's (apparently for a temporary period) vacate Bowery because obviously, it was being a parody of what it once had been. I was quite fond of the venue not only because of its significance in NY punk movement but also because of its superb stage layout(from the pov of a photographer AND a fan) and audio quality. you might think I mingle in a plethora of 5-star venues in a city like New York but I don't, in fact, it's really hard to come by a venue that meets the expectations...
oh well. Basically, what it meant for this particular gig was that I was less than a foot away from Sylvain Sylvain the entire time. I'm seeing them again in a week already. GEEZ. time flies fast fast fast.
I only have a vague memory of what had happened at the gig: that it was of course, amazing, and there were so many annoying photographers who kept on pushing through the crowd to take pics of the band.
That is all. I don't feel like reminiscing.
I'm too busy reading Dostoevsky and watching Disney. I should just do everything "D": Download porn with Dave O., Dance with myself, DAMN IT (sorry this lecture is frustrating me) maybe I'll fix this later. maybe I won't.

| Recommendations for bks and movies |
[19 Oct 2006|01:41pm] |
I've read some amazing books this year(18 so far, excluding required ones), and although most of them are well-known, we all know there's that one classic you never read, so here's my recommendation list: (:they were all recommended from friends/acquaintants so thank you!)
-Franny and Zooey by J.D.Salinger( and no, I don't like Catcher in the Rye) -On the Road by my fellow former EV resident( I love that)- Jack Kerouac -Howl & other poems by (another EV resident) - Allen Ginsberg -Jonathan Livingston Seagull(it's hilarious) by Richard Bach -Rotten-No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs by John Lydon -The Overcoat by Nikolay Gogol (holy mental!) -The Republic by Plato- I have to tell you, it's mind-blowing. -Ancient Egyptian poems (various sources)
Right now I'm reading Summer Crossing by Capote, re-reading Camus' The Stranger, and about to start on Cocteau's-(I absolutely love his works) Opium and The Difficulty of Being. Probably finish the year off with: 1. re-reading of Orwell's Animal Farm and Huxley's Brave New World. 2. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut 3. some Marquis de Sade(haven't decided which ones yet...Justine perhaps) 4. Venus in Furs by Severin 5. some books on Marx. Any more recommendations for me? I mean, with a freaking 21+ hr flight, I sure can use more.
as for movies: 1. Ballad of a Soldier 2. March of the Penguins(I was laughing maniacally...what the.) 3. The Scarlet Empress(uh, Dietrich's saying "..and come back in here" = holy amazingness) 4. Cleopatra(starring one and only Ms. Liz Taylor) -I'd seen only parts of it before 5. Diarios de motocicleta 6. Science of Sleep( "hi, I'm Gondry cliche to the max") 7. The Overcoat(not sure if there's more than one version) I love old movies that have the "wth" moments..like Et dieu crea femme(bahaha)
does anyone know where I can get a hold of La Femme et le Pantin made in 1929? it's a bw silent film, based on the eponymous book which also produced Cet Obscur Objet du Desir.

| repetition |
[18 Oct 2006|08:38pm] |
I don't know what's up. I'm in the midst of my typical college days, with roomates calling me over to their room to see them smoke through hooka inside their helmets(don't ask), walking over to 24 hr DD to grab an x-large coffee at 3 a.m., all while sleeping in one corner where it isn't so trashed whenever I get a chance.
what day is it. what hour is it. I do not know, I do not care. Everday is defined in reference to school; "2 days before exam" or perhaps in my case, every hour, every minute is defined that way. "37 mins before I go insane."
I'm too busy to feel stressed out. I celebrated my departure only for a second before I had to sink myself back into the world of thinking.
Things are happening, the world is spinning, all without me. Yet I'm too busy to feel anything.
I like traveling alone. I'm not restricted by others that way. I can wake up whenever I please, stay as long as I wish to without having to rush to the next place. Finding that rare luxury of solitary ranquility, that's my vacation. Not physical relaxation.
It was aganozing because I was seeing myself in comparison. Jealousy was not an issue but that elusive admiration was. When, and only when, I realized that I live on a different schedule, things started to look up and I started to see clearly.
I'll say this. I know I complain a whole load about how I'm so broke and yak yak yak, but somehow, this year I found myself scuffing away the heels of boots on the 6th St., admiring two staffs'(amazing) mohawks at the Black Cat, staring at ducks for hours on Lake Calhoun, waking up every 2 hours only to find the exact same scenery stretched out for miles and miles.
and in a few months, I'll find myself in lands of strange tongues. I don't need to find myself, I already know (too much) about myself. I'm just searching for something I already know.
I'll tell you how I know that it's the right time.
moi: "I booked the tickets today." parents: "when are you leaving?" m: "dec 29th." p: "so you are going to spend New Year's alone?" m: "probably chill in Madrid or something. you know I like traveling alone." p: "yea...we know" m: "and I'll fly there in time for (Chinese) New Year's" p: "oh ok. wait, where are you flying from?" m: "Istanbul." p: "ISTANBUL?" m: "Turkey, you know. I don't know where I'll go directly from Spain though, but I'll write to you." p: "oh ok."

| not dead/some info |
[16 Oct 2006|12:38pm] |
I can ramble on and on about what's been going on but since I don't have any time, here's the major update on my life/what I need help on:
I'm going to Salamanca Spain to live there for a month (late Dec-late Jan) travel around Europe, and possibly Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey(uh, Israel, Johnny?) if I can find time until mid-Feb, then head to South Korea and stay there until late June (travel?) (hopefully I'll find my way back to SxSW) come back to NY for July-mid Aug, head back to Salamanca(maybe stop by the U.K. for summer festivals) and stay there forever until at least late Dec. (and travel some more)
and here's where you come in: 1. Any recommendation for things-to-do/see in these places? 2. I'm looking despeartely for some paid travel photojournalism/journalism or combination of both. I usually prefer spending traveling one place in depth than going through 28908 places a day, but I'm open. I also plan on traveling to remote places as well as well-known landmarks, so if anyone has any information/tips and what not, please let me know. 3. Any cheap flight($500-600) from Europe/Tunisia/Egypt/Turkey to South Korea? I heard of cheap Turkish airline charter plane to Bangkok but haven't found it online, or any contact info...anything? I really don't feel like flying back and forth. edit: done! 4. Anyone you know/yourself willing to let me crash at their place(I sleep fine on the hard floor) in any of these countries? In return, I'll let you stay at my flat in Salamanca/South Korea-(uh, I get my own wing there) 5. Any info on Marketing(most ideal)/communications/Public Relations Internship in Salamanca Spain (or Madrid..but Salamanca is preferred) for Fall 2007? (Sep-Dec)
if you have any info, please let me know ASAP, thanks and see you somewhere.
edit: so I booked my flights in a frenzy state after spending an hour writing "knowledge of forms will enable the guardians lead us into the state of well-being" (seriously, I repeated that same sentence about 1980985 times in one page.)
anyways, so I'm leaving NY on 29th of Dec. to Madrid, Leaving Is-motherfucking-tanbul on the 14th of Feb, stopping at Qatal, then Shanghai, and finally arriving in Incheon on the 15th just in time for New Year's!!!
My ideal budget for flights was $750 total but it came out lower! 216.20 for OW NY-> Madrid, 479.65 OW Istanbul->Incheon --------------------------- grand total of $ 695.85
The NY-Madrid was found on www.airpluscomet.com, and Istanbul-Incheon was found on travelocity.com, out of all places. (btw, Istanbul-Incheon flight is 21+ hrs long. ........ .....all I'm saying is that they'd better have some amazing falafel on plane)
that means I'll have accomplished "crossing the globe"!!!! (ok flying is totally cheating for now but I'm sick)
I'm leaving Madrid on the 28th or 29th of Jan, either heading off to Africa or to up north. We'll see.

| UPDATE (finally) |
[06 Jun 2006|12:38pm] |
a few sets are up on Iggy*$$ They are mostly from the first day of SXSW 2006... I'm a laggard, what can I say. I'm going to be posting a few more sets throughtout today, because you know, one has nothing better to do on 06/06/06.
oh and if you like the photos, please spread the link & word, I'll really appreciate it.
what else... I REALLY need some help with setting up a proper layout for the website(s). contact me via email: iggy.starbucks@gmail.com if you (or know someone) can help me out... here's catch though: I can't pay monetarily lol I'll do one or more oddjobs in return instead, such as: -take some photos of you or something of your choice -show you around in NY(and possibly share my 6 X7-windowless-albeit-free-room during your stay) -possibly create some clothes -do some artworks -promote something online/offline
-provide some quality entertainment -not blog for a month, I don't know, something. it's your call.
on a personal note, last night totally compensated for the 2 months-long gig drought.. maybe I'll post a few photos to show lastnight's glory... but then again, I was too busy jumping around that I kind of forgot about photographing... crazy crazy crazy.

[05 Apr 2006|11:50am] |
Um...I was just going to complain about having to wear a winter coat in April. Even for a NEerner, it's unusual. Then on my way up the stairs, I saw it was snowing outside. .... ........
On the other note, the substitute professor is such a tart that I can hardly keep a straight face during his lecture...geez
and in (yet another) a hyper-caffeinated frenzy, mixed with 18890890802 "summary sheets," I managed to cut my finger once again...For the past few months, my fingers have been cut once every three days...what the hell?

| Sebastian Melmoth update |
[04 Apr 2006|08:40pm] |
It will be back on sometime around 7 p.m. tomorrow.
I can now sleep study..yep.

|
| oddity as an ode to you. |
[04 Apr 2006|01:49pm] |
Today has been really odd.
At one point, I was bouncing off the walls, full of energy and the next moment, I'm falling asleep during my second midterm. Then my professor stares down at my paper(saw this coming all these years) and decides to pick it up and show it to the entire class as an example of what accounting majors shouldn't do. I was laughing as I'm not majoring in accounting. I sure love it when people decide to act all chummy with me. ha.
I am so so so tired. I slept long enough, missed my first class to study for the midterm yet I still can't keep my head up and feel quite ill. Could it be because I stuffed my face with a jumbo burrito at noon in 2 seconds?
I think I'm going to the gym for now...inspite of the fact that I have another midterm to study for tomorrow...eh....yesterday, they kicked me off the treadmill. Seriously, what's up with that.
well one good news is that I heard back from my domain registry so I'm just waiting for them to unlock it for me....bah..

[01 Apr 2006|02:01am] |
Ok..what kind of "music store" doesn't have freaking Pet Sounds? and most importantly, what kind of self-professed "music nerd" doesn't have Pet Sounds in her collection? shame I say, shame.
Anyways, music is good my friends :]
The domain registration site is down...and I have 1909890835 pictures ready to upload...hopefully I'll hear back soon.
oh and London for a year for now ..."For now" meaning that there is a chance I might change my mind tomorrow.

[26 Mar 2006|04:17pm] |
pictures are on the way, ear drums are on their way out. Bought several CDs and as the result, 90% of my food money is gone so um, stop offering to buy me drinks at gigs, you know I wouldn't drink them. Buy me food instead. haha.
Yesterday, roomie took me out to celebrate my slowing-metabolism, death of youth, and no longer being pedophiles' object-of-desire. Ate more than I have been for the past 2 weeks, had snobby discussions as usual, wondered around in the wild west before catching a midnight showing of The Squid and the Whale at Angelika.(at my request of "no war movies, or movies about government. something dark but at the time somewhat light. A drama that doesn't give me drama"- who's the pain in the ass now)
Munched on a box of snocaps and then some chocolate chip cookies and before I knew it, the movie has ended and I liked it. It was that perfect dark yet light movie.
On our way out, we saw a big group of people and some blond girl with stringy hair walked out from the bathroom. I thought that she looked a lot like Courtney Love( I mean that stringy hair was taking the impersonation to whole another level) so told my roomie to which she replied, "it IS Courtney Love." Roomie was thinking that I wasn't going to notice since I never notice anyone/anything in the street. I only see 2 ft ahead of me in a blurred vision and rarely people's faces come in focus. Apparently, all those people were her entourage who we ran into outside once again. There was this girl who was standing aside with her cellphone out and we knew she looked apart. Roomie mentioned that she was trying to take pictures with her cameraphone and I kind of assumed that was what she was doing , but was hoping she had an ounce of dignity left in her, living upto her dreads. hahaha.

| bahahaha |
[24 Mar 2006|02:36am] |
I knew I took many shots, many many many. I didn't know it was 354 pictures though ahahahahaha. (for the record, I took an average of 250-400 pictures at SXSW each day and this was just one band, playing ONE NORMAL SET) what a crazy idiot.
and here's the thing(an advice from a rabid music nerd): if you are going to be a gimmick, be good at it. Believe in yourself, believe that you are this larger-than-life-persona. If you want to act all sexy, and sing filthy songs, put your heart in it and be the biggest harlot you've ever seen. If you want to look sexy, either buy clothes or get naked, don't DIY your clothes if you don't know anything about sewing or designing. and most importantly, if you want people(well everyone except some faghags and gay guys with bad taste in "music") to buy this shit you are putting on, do something to make a statement that says that you don't give a fuck about what others think rather than letting them read your insecurity. Kick the motherfucker in the face who's just standing there right in front of you, bored to death. That way, just MAYBE, I might grow a tiny bit of respect for you inspite of your "music."
oh and I love The Ark. yep, and I still abhor NY audience. I've made up 90% of my mind to move, all I need is that 10% push from someone.

[23 Mar 2006|12:05pm] |

I don't show up at work for a week(of course, notified in advance) and I get a hi-five from my supervisor haha.

| oh my.. |
[17 Mar 2006|01:46am] |
SXSW > my sanity.
honestly, this is it. (Aside from the whole curfew bullshits)wow...I absolutely love it like you wouldn't believe. My bones are shattering to pieces and I got suspicious bruises here and there but my dear, anything is worth this.
I'm leaving the place a bit later than usual tomorrow so which means I'll be up for another few hours giving you a bit of a glimpse of the amazingness.
